Bodychenan  |   House Extension & Retrofit

Pwllheli, Gwynedd, 2024

It has been exciting to work with a highly sustainable, carbon negative method of construction that is new to our practice. Hempcrete is an insulation material made by wet-mixing hemp shiv with a lime binder. It provides a vapour-permeable, airtight layer which also has great thermal mass. This material is built around a structural timber frame.

Hempcrete Cymru will be delivering the project for our client at Bodychenan. They will construct the wrap around extensions, that have been designed to create an open-plan feel on the ground floor. A new Glapor insulated slab will be installed throughout the ground floor. Woodfibre external insulation will be used on the existing house to improve its thermal performance. A freestanding photovoltaic array in the garden will reduce the reliance of energy from fossil fuels.
