Modular Timber Frame New Build House
Cwm-Y-Glo, Gwynedd, 2025
At the outset of every project, we consider what the most sustainable approach is. Should we reuse what is already there or start again from scratch. The existing house was in such a poor state that it was deemed unsafe and a significant part of it would have to be rebuilt. Therefore, we concluded that a new building constructed from timber and designed to Passivhaus standards would, over the life of the home, be both a more sustainable and comfortable solution.
The house is located on the edge of a hillside, in a small community on the edge of Snowdonia National Park. The principle elevation of the house is more traditional, to satisfy local planning policy, whilst the rear is more playful and utilises timber cladding. Photovoltaic panels with battery storage and air source heat pumps, including high levels of insulation will reduce the home's energy consumption and reliance on the grid.
